The Glenstone

Deep in the backwoods of Travilah, Maryland lies the Glenstone museum. A place that “seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and landscape into a serene and contemplative environment.” It also requires an advanced ticket. Which is free. But sells out months in advance. And is barely mentioned on their website. And thus, was not in our position when we arrived. After three hours of driving. Nevertheless, we persisted. And puckerage subsided once a small quantity of “day of” tickets found their way into our hands.

Elliott Rose Unterberger

Man. How do you describe the birth of your child? Expletives and emotions come to mind. And tears. Lots and lots of tears. In the four months since Elliott joined our family, I find it hard to travel back. Not because I can’t. Or don’t remember. But because so much has changed, there is so much to look forward to, and I am so thankful to have her in our life.

Yellowstone

Continuing the great Unterberger tradition of Great American Three-Day-Weekend vacations, we packed up the pooch and headed to the most income-unequal metro area in the country. Jackson, Wyoming! Snark and snoot aside, we actually went for Yellowstone, but that doesn’t make for good clickbait. Regardless, it far succeeded all expectations. The land was gorgeous, the bagels delicious, and the geysers surprisingly punctual.

Just A-Ridin’

Last September, Lauren and I flew to South Dakota to meet the rest of the Most Interesting Family in the latest installment of our “Tour America” series (see Niagara Falls, Kaiwah Island). We also became vegetarians. But that’s another story. This one’s about our time explorin’ the Mount Rushmore state, chasin’ prairie dogs, and recitin’ the collected works of Charles Badger Clark.

Vancouver

There’s lots of fun to be had in Vancouver. Walk Stanley park. Visit Granville Island. Watch the Canucks lose to the Kings. Yes, these are cool. But nothing compares to the skill and endurance required to land a penny in the narrow opening of a frozen swill pot. For this memory, and the many attempts at ultimate success, I will be forever grateful.

Women’s March Los Angeles

womens-march-8

I have a confession. I almost didn’t march. Go ahead. Judge me. I’ll wait. In all honestly, I didn’t realize what the marches were about. Yes, I can read, so I knew it was for women. But I was turned off by the idea of protesting for protesting’s sake. Spontaneous rallies had broken out Downtown earlier in the week, and while I supported the cause I hated the goons who used the opportunity to close freeways, scream at cops, and twiddle up their T-Shirts into muggers masks. None of that was experience at the women’s march. Not in the slightest.

Swing Away

softball-6

Now we can’t play ball no more. With the squad on bye week I thought it appropriate to post memories from our first two seasons. Hopefully it’ll encourage some, I’ll say shy, members of the team to get in front of the lens next time. Remember kids. There’s heroes and there’s legends. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.

Oogie Boogie

We didn’t have costumes. No buckets of candy neither. Instead we paired a gallon of cider with unrelenting desire to carve the shit out of some pumpkins.

Stingray Shuffle

Scan-151003-0017

I used to pray for waves. Then I bought a Nikonos. Don’t get me wrong, a long day of surf beats almost anything out there. It’s just green flags don’t spell doom anymore. Lake Laguna means I get to break out my diving buddy, and there’s something so appealing about this camera. You want to hold it, shoot it, generally drool over it (which you can, cause it’s waterproof). Remember those dinky disposable cameras they sell in Hawaiian gift shops? Remember daydreaming about shots that may or may not come out? This thing is that damn exciting, except you end up taking decent pictures.

Papua New Guinea

Scan-150106-0015

It’s been awhile since my last post, and even longer since our trip to Papua New Guinea. That said, the images haven’t gotten any less gorgeous. Or I more modest. The process takes patience, ruthlessness and a fair bit of procrastination—but I’m stoked on the final edit and happy to finally share them here.
