The Glenstone

Deep in the backwoods of Travilah, Maryland lies the Glenstone museum. A place that “seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and landscape into a serene and contemplative environment.” It also requires an advanced ticket. Which is free. But sells out months in advance. And is barely mentioned on their website. And thus, was not in our position when we arrived. After three hours of driving. Nevertheless, we persisted. And puckerage subsided once a small quantity of “day of” tickets found their way into our hands.

Chincoteague Pony Swim

One of the first things I heard about when moving to Virginia was the legendary Chincoteague Pony Swim. Problem is, that’s about all I heard. Few knew anything about the event, and even fewer knew someone who had attended in person. In my head it all went down on some island, far from civilization, where cowboys led wild ponies into the ocean towards greener pastures. Turns out, I wasn’t all that wrong. But just like the folks who told me “you should go!”, my daydreams were simply lacking in details.

A White Christmas

This Christmas past we ventured upstate to spend a few days in the Hillsdale house. It was my first time seeing Sarah and Dan’s epic home, and the first time I’d ever experienced a White Christmas. So naturally, I took an absurd amount of photos of Oliver in the snow. And not in the snow. And looking at farm animals.

Paso Robles

paso-robles-1

Diving into the archives for back-to-back birthday posts, this one a few years shy of the ole one-six. If memory serves we spent the long weekend holed up in a killer farm house, eating epic meals, driving back roads, and searching for photo ops. Sounds like any Elliott trip worth taking.

Vancouver

There’s lots of fun to be had in Vancouver. Walk Stanley park. Visit Granville Island. Watch the Canucks lose to the Kings. Yes, these are cool. But nothing compares to the skill and endurance required to land a penny in the narrow opening of a frozen swill pot. For this memory, and the many attempts at ultimate success, I will be forever grateful.

Women’s March Los Angeles

womens-march-8

I have a confession. I almost didn’t march. Go ahead. Judge me. I’ll wait. In all honestly, I didn’t realize what the marches were about. Yes, I can read, so I knew it was for women. But I was turned off by the idea of protesting for protesting’s sake. Spontaneous rallies had broken out Downtown earlier in the week, and while I supported the cause I hated the goons who used the opportunity to close freeways, scream at cops, and twiddle up their T-Shirts into muggers masks. None of that was experience at the women’s march. Not in the slightest.

The Years Drag On

Scan-150301-0023

The place was dark. The men wore drag. And the photos were dirty (literally and figuratively). Just the way she liked it. A lesser woman might have chosen aggressive drinking and bad decisions, but Ansley went the route less traveled. Long Beach.

The 4th

Cover

New rule. It is OK to do a late holiday post, as long as said post goes up on another holiday. The logic is sound, and I’m sticking to it. Today we flashback two months to our nation’s independence, and what has now become the traditional pooch-pool-party.

Giving Thanks

12Last Thanksgiving, the birds descended on the NY nest for a Crosby cookout. This go-around, we took turkey time back to the Golden state. Splitting time between sets of cousins, pooches, parents, and grandparents, we soaked up the sun and our fair share of gravy. It was the perfect opportunity to test out my new piece of kit, the Contax 645, and I burned through six rolls without batting an eye. Looking back, I probably should have slowed down a bit as more than a few shots turned returned woefully out of focus. But user error aside, when this thing nails it…IT NAILS IT! It’s the keepers and that “look” that really get me going…Gobble Gobble!

Halloweenies

titleThe girls did an EPIC job decorating the pad for All Hallows’ Eve, and the costumes that came out did not disappoint. Casual cavorting transitioned to Cards Against Humanity, which blurred (quite literally) into craziness at Karaoke. All in all the night was a major success, even if the workday after was anything but.
