I’d seen these two around the park before and always surrounded by a crowd (deservedly so, that’s a freaking cockatoo riding a bicycle). But I’m more of a one-on-one guy, so when I saw Ronny in a rare moment of peace, I decided to change that.

More Ronny (and if you stick around, my new favorite portrait) after the break.Scan-140803-0013

Ronny and Benny,
My name is Graham and we met last week in the park when I asked to take your portrait. I’ve just gotten the Hasselblad film developed, and wanted to share the results with you as I think they turned out AWESOME.
Enjoy the rest of the summer, and hope to see you around the park again sometime soon,
Graham

Re: Washington Square Park Hasselblad Portrait
Wow, like something from life magazine—-it tells too much truth!!!!

I agree with Ronny on this one. Modesty aside, the Tri-X/Hasselblad combo does give off that LIFE look. Not so sure about what he means by the truth bit. Maybe it’s a “pets look like their owners” deal? Either way, I managed to rattle off a few more frames than usual and had a hard time narrowing down the selection. I like each individual image, with different frames bringing different stuff to the table. Look at the title image. Benny shaking his tail-feather feels like a perfect reproduction of Ronny’s majestic mop. Then there’s the shot below. Something about the composition draws me in. Maybe it’s the way his hand looks like Benny’s feet (as does the bike brake.) Or maybe it’s the mini bird harness.

Then I scanned in this baby, and thought I had the clear winner. “Kiss the Ring,” just like a king.Scan-140803-0005
But my favorite and best image of the bunch is the baby below. I LOVE it. Everything about it. And that’s why I couldn’t send it to Ronny. Would he think I was making fun of him? Would he not respond? What if he hated it? I’ll never know those answers, but I’m still obsessed. Look at the way Ronny and Benny have the same posture. The same blank  stare. The same open mouth. Then there’s the framing, bizarre yet balanced. And finally my favorite detail, the trash bag wrapped handlebar whose shape forms a miniature of the bird to its left. Scan-140803-0011
