B+W Beach

I managed to run the B+W film over to get processed, and followed with some quick and dirty scans of the prints to post up on the blog. I have always been intruiged with getting back into film, and now I am actually loving shooting 35mm. It is an interesting experience, at once prohibitive and limiting. Most of the shots turn out lame, but the few that come out make it that much sweeter.

THE MAMA

Early Thursday morning, the mama walked through our door. Single and ready to mingle (a.k.a traveling solo), she geared up to show see NYC from a “native” perspective. Being the ever accommodating host that I am, I decided to drag her along to Adorama to snag some necessary camera gear. While up there, we also managed to grab lunch in the back of ABC, and re-discover Fishs Eddy. Utilizing the Brompton’s as our primary mode of transport, we jammed all across the city trying to secure a unique necklace, while snagging some quality sammies at Alidoro. Munching our lunch in a nearby park, we jumped back on the bikes and waited for Lauren’s return from work. Dinner at Locanda Verde was epic, made even better when I got my Don Draper on and ordered an Old Fashioned. The Mama and I continued onward, subwaying it up to 34th to climb the Empire State Building. Stalled by a sweet talking ticket taker, we somehow managed to sign up for their version of the deluxe package, which included a must-have ticket to a Kevin Baconized version of Star Tours. Also included in the package; a 30 minute detour, one confiscated tripod, and a positively pleasant case of motion sickness. But the 86th floor was worth all the crap, a serene landing lined with people quietly absorbing the city’s beauty. One Chevy Impala and 12 hours later, the crew was Hampton bound. Forecast be damned, the weather was perfect, giving this beach deprived kid his time in the sun. Dinner at “LUNCH” completed the Montauk Mission, a picturesque seafood joint serving up lobster rolls and fried puffers. Our last day began with a visit to the always enjoyable High Line, and ended with dinner at a new place Buddakan. Somehow managing to get into Please Don’t Tell’s phone line after 6 calls, we spent bid the city goodbye  sipping drinks and speakin’ easy…

The Rob Comes To Town

It’s been a long time coming. Last weekend, Rob made a solo journey up to 7S to come hang with the locals. It was a condensed visit, and one that definitely didn’t last as long as it should have. But that didn’t stop him, or us, from making the most of it, and make the most we did. Friday morning, the Brompton brothers jammed up to B+H, a somewhat religious pilgrimage, to check out some…screw it we didn’t’ need a reason. We chummed it up with an old acquaintance behind the counter that sold Sarah her first Leica’s, and proceeded to roam the premises. Rob headed off to lunch at Glamour with Lauren, and we all met up later for dinner at Bond st. Unsatisfied with just a belly o’ fish, the gang roamed down Saint Mark’s and paid a visit to the illustrious Crif Dog, and what a visit that was. We followed that feast with lunch at Ed’s the next day, and discovered the Summer Streets activities. All of Lafayette was closed down, letting people roam free in the streets. It was the perfect atmosphere to try out the newly discovered Hexar Af, an old 35mm camera Sarah had left behind in the appartment. The Hexar may not be the best looker, but it enjoys a semi-cult status among photographers for its almost silent shutter. Shooting with the rangefinder got my obsessive self back into film, and I took out the time-tested Nikkormat SLR as well. Dinner at Del Posto put us all into comas, and the rest of the night saw our energies devoted to digestion. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much time to regroup before brunch at the Dutch the next morning. I must admit, I had my doubts, but I don’t think I have ever eaten a breakfast faster. A damn fine visit I’d say.

Field Notes | Signs

I’ve been waiting to do this post for a while now. I think the reason it has taken me so long to do so, is that I have slowly come to the realization that the collection might grow smaller and smaller as I leave New York and return back to school. Not that there isn’t plenty of quirky sinage in LA, but just that New York is in such a constant state of overstimulation that these mishaps continue to thrive and endure without censorship. When I find hidden gems like these, I can suddenly justify taking my camera out everyday, and life is grand.

Field Notes | Carvings

I take the subway back from work. It’s either too hot to walk, or I just want to get home and be home. Some days I feel like roaming, and a leisurely stroll back to 7S sounds perfect. Today was one of those days and on my walk home I stumbled upon this gem. The building was rimmed with the beautiful circular design, so I just stopped and documented. You have to love the detail.

More after the break.

Rain Delay

Compliments of Jehad, Lauren and I got to visit New Yankee Stadium, and witness the Bronx Bombers beat up on the Mariners. It was rad to see the new stadium (comparing it to the old one we visited 2 years ago), and I loved how the park still had that old-school feel. When we arrived, CC was throwing a perfect game, but halfway through the 6th inning mother nature started dumping. The game was delayed for 45 minutes, and it being in NY, most of the fans had headed home by the time the covers came off. We gutted it out for 20 more minutes before the heavens opened up again, but by that point the perfect game was out of reach. All is well though, because I got to pretend to be an east-coaster and suffer through a weather delay, something completely foreign to this California kid.

Fisheyes

Ever since grabbing the GF-2, I feel guilty for ditching my trusty G-10. I loved that camera, and it was the rig that really got me back into taking pictures. But with my new gadget, I found myself reaching less and less for the G10, and the dust began to collect on my old friend. What could I do to bring the trusty little bugger back into my arsenal? A quick check of the bank account, a trip over to Amazon.com, and a purchase of a $50 fisheye conversion successfully brought the G10 back into rotation. I couldn’t be happier with the upgrade, and for such a cheap piece of glass its super fun to mess around with (and it churns out decent quality too)

Family Intervention

Last weekend was EPIC, and unfortunately too little of the adventures ever managed to be photographed. These included (but not limited to)

Skipping work, Nobu with Seth Meyers, Triangle Below Canal, ABC lunch, SoHo shopping, Battery Park bicycling, 2nd row Book of Mormon, “Manning Up”, Blue Hill Farmer’s Feast, Subway de-virginizing, Ground Zero, Penn Art Show, Bio-pondage, 3 hour limo cabin fever, Joy Burger Bar, Sallugi’s Pizza, and sad goodbye’s. Guess it all comes with the territory.
