Contact | Judah

More CONTACT after the break…

Judah ShinesAs it always happens, I was so happy that I didn’t chicken out. I’m not sure why I still stress about approaching strangers, I’ve only regretted it twice, and both times I was flashing (camera flash, not flesh) the sh*t out of them. Needless to say I don’t do that anymore, and since then I’ve only had amazing experiences. The regret of missing an opportunity is always more damaging than the defeat of a subject refusing. Such was the case with Judah, who was extremely friendly, open, honest and approachable. I asked about the foil, and he explained it was his way of standing out, a physical expression of his personality. And it doesn’t stop at his hair, he had jewelry and even teeth covered in the shiny stuff. I dug that. I fired off a few shots with the Hexar (which was acting up due to the cold), traded Facebook information, and swapped stories for a while. I’ve since seen Judah a few times on my walks back from work, but it wasn’t until now that I could put the finishing touches on his portrait.

Hey Judah,

My name is Graham and we met on the street a few weeks back when I asked to take your portrait on MacDougal. I wanted to share the results with you, as I just got around to developing the film, and I think everything turned out really rad. It was a pleasure meeting and talking with you, and I hope to see you around again soon.

Thanks, Graham

  1. I love this one, but I love it even more that you are meeting these extraordinary people in your city. Some times I worry about you being too out there, but then I realize you’re making connections, real connections to learn about people and not just pass them by.
Good for you! I would probably crossed the street if I saw this “crazy guy with foil in his hair”.

    • Thanks Momma, it means a lot to hear that! I’ve really changed in my approach to photography, ultimately it’s still about getting the shot, but it’s not the end all be all anymore. I honestly enjoy talking to these people, hearing their stories and sharing in a little slice of their life. It’s part of the process now. But don’t worry, I generally avoid the really sketchy people.
